Students aged 3 - 11Reading and talking are the two most fundamental learning skills we need in our life. If we can talk, we can communicate. We can thrive. If we can read, we can fully integrate into society. Emma knows how it is to be able to speak a language but to be illiterate, having learned spoken Japanese and having to learn to read it 'on the job'. Imagine not knowing what was what on a menu!
Tuition focuses on the structured development of reading and speaking, as well as development of listening, comprehension and writing. Sessions begin with a review of prior learning, checking homework tasks set by Emma to consolidate independent learning, and then continue with learning that will extend skills further. Usually, these are very practical, focusing on doing and talking, rather than listening. Emma often models the skills, then works with your child to ensure they can apply those skills themselves. Emma uses a range of reading strategies, using the highly successful Education Bradford "Better Reading Partnership" strategies for improving reading, alongside phonics work and Search Lights strategies. She also uses practice from the Sounds-Write scheme to support phonics teaching. Sessions start from 15 euros |
Students aged 11-18Like sessions for younger students, review is essential at the beginning of each session to ensure that learning has been understood from prior sessions. From there, Emma explores a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, as a springboard for reading, oral work and writing. Modelling and exploration of higher level thinking, reading and writing skills are crucial
Emma tailors these sessions to ensure students cover the full width of the curriculum whilst also ensuring students maximise their exam potential. Exam preparation is vital and much work goes to ensure students feel confident and familiar with the assessment they will be undertaking. If you are living in France and wish your child to follow an iGCSE or international A Level course, this can be arranged easily. Emma teaches active revision skills, essay writing, structuring writing and supports students as they generate ideas. Sometimes, looking at a blank piece of paper, waiting for an idea, especially in an exam situation, is the most terrifying experience of all. These are equally important, if not more so, in French examinations. Sessions start from 20 euros |
Adult students
Public speaking is the biggest fear, bigger than fear of death or fear of flying! More people feel uncomfortable talking than anything else, particularly when learning a new language or building on skills they may have acquired some time ago. It is vital oral work takes a large part in adult learning sessions. Emma has also worked with students from across many university disciplines to help them structure essays, dissertations and to train them in critical thinking.
